Cacao is the healthiest food on the planet. Yep, we said it. And unlike many other purported “superfoods,” there’s an abundance of proof to back up that admittedly audacious statement. Like any delicious gift from Mother Nature, cacao is best consumed on its own. This means you’ll experience the most life-giving, love-inducing, possibly even age-defying benefits with 100% cacao—the true “food of the gods.”

Below, we look into cacao’s most magical ingredients and its potential to boost your brain and heart health; improve your gut, skin, mood, and overall well-being; and even combat chronic diseases.

What’s in 100% Cacao?

There are over 300 nutrients and compounds in cacao, and while it’s tempting to expound on all of them, we’ll spare you the geekery and reserve this space for some of its key players. Here’s a brief breakdown of cacao’s rich and diverse nutritional profile:

Theobromine

Cacao is the richest source of theobromine on the planet and the inspiration for the name theobromine itself. This naturally occurring compound was first discovered in 1841 and given its name in honor of the cacao tree, coined Theobroma cacao, a term derived from Greek that translates as “food of the gods.”

A gentle stimulant, theobromine is closely related to caffeine, but it won’t give you the same jitters or inevitable energy crash. Theobromine can improve cognitive function, enhance performance, boost mood, and promote overall cardiovascular health. Read more about chocolate’s many other psychoactive compounds here.

Caffeine

Alongside theobromine, cacao contains caffeine, another stimulant in a class of alkaloids known as xanthines. A 2.5-tablespoon serving of 100% cacao powder provides you with about 50 mg of caffeine, or roughly half the amount of a cup of coffee. The most caffeinated cacao comes from countries in South America, including Ecuador, Venezuela, and Peru.

Of course, caffeine has its many known pros and cons: the quick energy but sometimes quicker crash, and the increased mental functioning but subsequent withdrawal, to name a few. But when it comes to cacao, there may be a significant synergistic effect between theobromine, caffeine, and several other compounds in chocolate. This incomparable combo may enhance mood, cognition, and even the taste of chocolate itself. Read more about the links between chocolate, coffee, and caffeine here.

Antioxidants

Cacao is also one of the richest sources of antioxidants on Earth. It’s packed with a wide range of polyphenols and flavanols and competes with superfood stars like goji berries, acai, and blueberries in its impressive antioxidant load. Antioxidants fight free radicals and oxidation in the body and offer an abundance of anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects. The antioxidants in cacao appear to be highly bioavailable, meaning our bodies absorb them incredibly well. Another positive of so many antioxidants: it makes for a highly stable product with a long shelf life.

The amount of antioxidants in raw cacao will vary significantly between batches, seasons, and growing regions. Research has also focused on whether aspects of the chocolate-making process (particularly fermentation and roasting) can dilute its antioxidant properties. That said, 100% cacao powder or cacao nibs will be quite the antioxidant powerhouse. Just avoid any Dutch-process cocoa, in which the cacao beans are washed in an alkaline solution of potassium carbonate to neutralize their acidity. This process significantly reduces the antioxidant count—up to nearly 80%, according to one study.

Essential Minerals

Cacao is a veritable vessel of essential micronutrients. Many of these support crucial body functions while offering powerful antioxidant properties, immune support, and protection against chronic diseases. Here’s a rough estimate of how much a one-ounce serving of cacao powder contains:

These numbers are based on average commercial cocoa powders. The mineral composition can also vary depending on the growing region and richness of the soil. It’s safe to assume that minimally processed cacao that’s been grown via sustainable practices will contain even more of these and other essential minerals.

Fiber

Cacao is also a rather fiber-rich food. Dietary fiber promotes a healthy weight, blood sugar control, and gastrointestinal health. And some 95% of Americans don’t get enough of it. One ounce of cacao powder can contain around 9 grams of fiber or roughly 35% of your daily value. That’s about the same as a cup of boiled green peas. Which would you prefer?

Protein

Cacao even contains a significant amount of protein, some 5 grams or more per ounce. Some of the amino acids that make up this protein offer their own unique benefits, including tryptophan—a precursor to serotonin and beneficial for mood and sleep—which is most abundant in cacao beans from Ecuador.

10 Health Benefits of Cacao

The seemingly humble cacao bean is a nutritional powerhouse. And because it can be transformed into such a toothsome treasure, scientists seem rather motivated to study it. There’s already a ton of research on cacao’s many benefits—most of it incredibly promising.

Here’s a quick rundown of some notable findings.

1. Improves Cognitive Function

Regular cacao consumption can improve general cognition, attention, processing speed, and working memory, and reduce mental fatigue—not just right after you consume it, but even in the long term. Much of this is thanks to theobromine, caffeine, and all those flavonols. This study found it could even reduce some measures of age-related cognitive dysfunction.

2. Boosts the Immune System

While there have yet to be clinical trials to prove a direct link between cacao and immune function, we can deduce that—with its impressive amounts of flavonoids and minerals—consuming cacao may have beneficial effects on the immune system. It’s a good source of zinc, one of the most important nutrients for fighting off bacteria and viruses, and its polyphenols help feed good gut bacteria, which are also essential to keeping strong immunity. Heck, cacao may even be able to increase the production of your body’s white blood cells.

3. Supports the Cardiovascular System

Cacao’s dense concentration of theobromine and flavonols is largely responsible for its ability to decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease. Minerals like potassium and zinc are also crucial in maintaining strong blood vessels and a healthy cardiovascular system. Cacao can lower high blood pressure, improve blood flow, prevent blood clots, raise HDL (the “good” cholesterol), and protect against oxidation of LDL. Eating dark chocolate more than five times per week lowered the risk of heart disease by 57% in this study.

4. Protects Against Chronic Diseases and Maybe Even Cancer

Cocoa polyphenols express antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic properties. Such health-promoting goodness goes a long way in protecting against oxidative stress and chronic inflammation—both major risk factors for cancer and other chronic diseases. Antioxidant effects can directly influence insulin resistance, helping to reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes, while the anti-inflammatory potential of cocoa flavanols may offer protection against everything from coronary heart disease to chronic kidney disease.

5. Supports the Gut

The gut microbiome is so vital and complex it’s often referred to as “the second brain.” An increasing amount of research is discovering just how important the bacteria in your gut is when it comes to all aspects of your body and brain. A healthy gut can potentially prevent or improve health conditions, including mood disorders, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, arthritis, obesity, and cancer. Consuming cocoa flavanols can offer a prebiotic effect, stimulating the growth of healthy gut bacteria.

6. Boosts Mood

Simply put, chocolate can make you feel good. A wide array of cacao’s chemical compounds offer significant mood-enhancing properties, including theobromine, caffeine, phenylethylamine (otherwise known as the “love drug”), and some of the body’s own naturally occurring antidepressants like anandamide (whose name translates as “bliss”), tryptophan, and serotonin.

7. Improves Sleep Quality

How well you sleep often depends on how stressed you are. Cacao can be both energizing and calming, giving you the right balance of each, kind of like adaptogenic herbs. It can reduce blood pressure (insomniacs often have higher nighttime blood pressure) and mitigate the effects of anxiety (another thing keeping many of us awake at night) due to its magnesium concentration and trace amounts of tryptophan. And even though theobromine is a mild stimulant, it could still contribute to longer sleep.

8. Enhances Performance

The flavanols in cacao can influence the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), which often equates to enhanced physical performance. Indeed, this study found that after eating dark chocolate, cyclists used less oxygen and covered a longer distance compared to a cacao-less ride. Read more about the performance-enhancing properties of cacao here.

9. Protects Skin and Teeth

Among all these cacao benefits, it can even make you look good. Its flavanols help protect the skin from sun damage. This in turn can reduce wrinkles and even boost collagen, according to a study on mice. Meanwhile, theobromine’s antimicrobial effects have proven it can be more potent than fluoride in protecting your teeth from decay. Yes, cacao face masks are now indeed a thing, and no, we will not judge if you decide to start swishing and gargling with cacao, too.

10. Slows Down Aging

Could a deep vat of chocolate be the true fountain of youth? Perhaps. And if all the above health benefits won’t convince you of cacao’s age-defying power, perhaps a few more studies will. Along with keeping your skin fresh and firm, cacao can delay the onset of age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Another fascinating study found that one major flavonoid in cacao, called epicatechin, showed anti-aging effects in mice. After a regular diet that included epicatechin, the gene expression and protein levels of old mice resembled that of young mice, and their survival rate increased by a whopping 69%. Of course, human studies are necessary to verify this potential, but that’s reason enough for us to add a little more cacao to our daily routines.

How to Incorporate 100% Cacao Into Your Diet

Ok, now’s the fun part. Got a chocolate craving? Good. Here are some easy, tasty ways to incorporate 100% cacao into your diet to start enjoying all these cacao benefits and get you feeling smarter, younger, happier, and healthier:

Of course, not all cacao is created equally. The quality, taste, and nutrition of cacao can differ drastically depending on where it’s grown and how it’s processed. In general, the healthier the land and simpler the process, the better.

Our 100% Full Spectrum Cacao Powder is the purest form of cacao you can feed your body. And if you prefer something a little less intense, we invite you to try one of our dark chocolate bars made with just two ingredients: cacao and organic cane sugar.

Less than 30% of a whole cacao pod is used in the typical chocolate production process. Opportunities exist for cacao farmers to generate additional revenue streams from the rest of the pod and reduce food waste at the same time. In our first post, we highlighted opportunities to incorporate cacao fruit – the sweet white pulp surrounding cacao beans – into various drinks and foods. In part two of this series, we explore the broad range of uses for cacao pod husks.

THE CACAO POD HUSK

diagram of cacao pod with cacao pod husk, pulp, and cacao bean labeled

The fibrous outer cacao pod husk is the largest part of the cacao pod by weight, accounting for over two-thirds of a pod at harvest time. Divided into three layers from the outside inward – the epicarp, the mesocarp and the endocarp, these together protect the cacao beans as they grow. The husk is rich in dietary fiber, lignin, bioactive antioxidants, and other components that could be used across multiple industries18.

Once the pulp-covered cacao beans are removed, the pod husk usually becomes a wasted byproduct. If left in the cacao field, diseased pods could threaten future yields by spreading black pod rot disease. Fields affected with this disease can see up to a 90% decline in production if left untreated1,15. Therefore, removing the pods can not only prevent or minimize the spread of the disease, but also create an additional income stream or provide a beneficial input for the farm.

UPCYCLED PRODUCTS FROM CACAO POD HUSKS

packages of granola, chocolate bar, and trail mix from Blue Stripes Urban Cacao
  • Flour for Baking: cacao pod husks can be dried and pulverized into a powder or flour used in food production. With its high fiber and water-soluble pectin content, cacao pod husk flour has been substituted for starch in sausages7,9 and added to bread to increase fiber content3. Blue Stripes Urban Cacao uses the husk as “Cacao Shell Fiber” in its chocolate bars, trail mix, and granola.
  • Soap: dried cacao pod husks contain about 40% potash after they are burnt. This can be a source of alkali for soap making11. Cocoa Potash in Ghana produces caustic potash and potash fertilizer from cacao pod husks and then teaches women’s groups to make soap from potash. HH Cosmetics uses potash from cacao pod husks in its African Black Soap Shampoo. Cacao pod husks are also used as an exfoliant in Cocoa & Ash Soap from Sitronu and Cacao Husk & Orange soap from Namawe.
  • Bioenergy: both small-scale and large-scale projects to produce energy from cacao pod husks have been planned in West Africa. These include 5kW generation units in Ghana and a 75MW biomass power plant in Cote d’Ivoire13,16,20.

  • Bioactive Compounds: cacao pod husks contain valuable compounds that can be extracted for use in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and functional food products. The same bioactive compounds that provide dark chocolate with its health benefits are present in the cacao pod husk, making this byproduct a promising source of the following compounds:
    • Dietary Fiber: cacao pod husks have a total dietary fiber content of about 35%10. High dietary fiber consumption is associated with a lower risk of many cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases as well as diabetes and obesity4. As such, there are efforts to encourage individuals to consume more dietary fiber, including through functional foods and supplements.
    • Antioxidants: polyphenols, especially flavonoids, are found in cacao pod husks and can help improve cardiovascular health and protect against cancer6,10,12.
    • Theobromine: this stimulant is similar to caffeine but also has properties that could be relevant for asthma and respiratory disease and cardiovascular health14. Theobromine is readily available as a supplement powder and was previously used in some pharmaceutical applications.
    • Pectin: the pectin extracted from cacao pod husk may have biomedical application, especially for pharmaceutical formulation of controlled release drugs2,5.
    • Phytosterols: these compounds help manage blood cholesterol levels and may help prevent obesity, diabetes and cancer8. Phytosterols are available in a dietary supplement.

ON FARM BENEFICIAL USES FOR CACAO POD HUSKS

Hands holding compost dirt
  • Animal Feed: animals like Nile tilapia, pigs, and goats have thrived on feed that includes wet or dried cocoa pod husks17. This points to a cost savings opportunity, especially for livestock farmers in cacao-growing regions or those willing to process cacao pod husks into a shelf stable additive for animal feed.
  • Compost: composting provides the opportunity to replace nutrients that were removed from the soil by crops without resorting to conventional fertilizer. The compost can be further enriched with animal manure or green manure (plant matter) to increase the overall nutrient content19. Hacienda Betulia is a cacao farm in Colombia that highlights its efforts to recycle cacao pod husks through worm composting.

  • Biochar: like compost, biochar is a soil amendment that adds nutrients back into the soil. Created by burning the cacao pod husks with limited air exposure, biochar improves moisture retention in soil and is slower to break down than compost19.

UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

Although we have highlighted diverse opportunities to use cacao pod husks in food, energy production, personal care, and animal feed, the reality is that most cacao pod husks are not generating additional revenue for farmers. Some potential uses are still mainly academic. Others require large investments in infrastructure to process cacao pod husks at origin. In contrast to cacao fruit, which food entrepreneurs in origin countries and around the world are using in new ways, cacao pod husks remain very underutilized. This points both to the challenge of value-added processing in cacao-growing communities and to the market access needed to achieve the desired financial, social, and environmental impact at scale.

Acai – sometimes written as açaí – is an inch-long, reddish-purple berry that comes from a South American palm tree. While acai is relatively new to North American and European markets, Indigenous tribes of the Amazon region have eaten it for centuries. Some companies have marketed acai berries as a superfood that can help reverse aging and aid with weight loss. But do they live up to the hype?

There’s no formal medical definition of a superfood. But the term generally refers to a food that’s high in healthy nutrients like fiber or antioxidants. Acai seems to fit the bill, since studies show that acai fruit pulp is even richer in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries. Acai, pronounced ah-SI-ee, also contains fiber as well as other vitamins and minerals.

As in all Super Food or medicinal plants there’s little scientific evidence, though, that they actually promote medical benefits.

Some studies have found that acai berries or acai juice:

May protect against free radicals

Free radicals lead to a process called oxidation, which damages cells. Experts believe cell oxidation may be a leading cause of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. But we need more research into whether antioxidants could lower the risk of these illnesses.

Acai’s purple color comes from the antioxidant anthocyanin. Early studies have shown that anthocyanins protect cells from oxidation damage. But we need further studies into its effects in humans and how much acai you might need to get this effect.

Early research shows that eating or drinking acai may help lower LDL – or “bad” – cholesterol levels. Too much LDL cholesterol in your body can lead to the buildup of a substance called plaque in your arteries. This causes blockages that could result in heart disease or a stroke.

May help manage blood sugar

One study found that overweight people who ate or drank acai pulp for 30 days were better able to manage their blood sugar. Carrying extra weight increases your risk of having high blood sugar levels and getting type 2 diabetes.

We need more research into whether acai can help with blood sugar management, and what the right dosage of acai might be.

Why is acai used in beauty products?

Some cosmetics and other beauty products include acai oil because antioxidants are thought to help protect your skin against the damaging effects of free radicals. There’s little research into this, though.

But acai oil may be a safe alternative to other tropical oils often used in beauty products like:

  • Facial and body creams
  • Anti-aging skin therapies
  • Shampoos and conditioners

Marketers’ claims that acai products promote rapid weight loss are unproven. In fact, early studies show that acai has no effect on weight at all.

While berries and other fruits add healthful nutrients to your diet, the jury’s still out on whether there’s something about acai that promotes weight loss.

In 2013, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ordered certain online marketers of acai products for weight loss to pay $9.4 million in fines and settlements for misleading claims.

If you need help with weight loss, contact a doctor, nutritionist, or another specialist in this area.

There’s not a lot of official information about the nutritional value of acai, which is mostly sold in the U.S. as a frozen puree. For exact nutrition information, read the label of the acai product you’re eating or drinkin

According to the FDA, a 2-ounce serving of acai puree has:

  • 60 calories
  • 3 grams of fiber
  • 2 grams of protein
  • 5 grams of fat
  • 6 grams of carbohydrates
  • 40 milligrams of calcium
  • 1,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A
  • 9.6 milligrams of vitamin C
  • 60 milligrams of potassium

Things to watch out for:

Acai is generally safe to eat as a fruit pulp in smoothies and acai bowls. But drinking pure, unprocessed, acai juice may lead to Chagas disease. This happens when a parasite from rural areas in Central and South America infects the fruit. Some people who get this disease never have symptoms.

Two popular ways to use acai are in a smoothie or acai bowl. Both require blending frozen acai pulp or acai berry sorbet with other ingredients of your choice.

You can also find acai in many supplements, in powder, tablet, or capsule form.

Acai bowl: How to make your own

Ingredients:

  • 8-ounce packet unsweetened frozen acai puree
  • 1 mediumbanana
  • ½ cupblueberries
  • 1 tablespoonhoney
  • 3 tablespoons granola
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened coconut flakes
  • ½ cupnonfat Greek yogurt

Instructions:

  • Pour water on the frozen acai puree for a few seconds to break it up.
  • Mix in a blender: the acai berry puree, half the banana, ¼ cup of the blueberries, the yogurt, and the honey.
  • Stop the blender and stir it from time to time until you have the thickness you want.
  • Pour into a bowl.
  • Use the rest of the fruit, the granola, and the coconut as toppings for your bowl.

If you have pollen allergies or are sensitive to acai or similar berries, you may want to avoid this fruit. If you eat it in moderate amounts, though, acai is likely safe for most people.

Acai seems to be safe when you eat it as a food. We don’t know the typical side effects of acai supplements because there isn’t much research on them yet.Risks

Don’t eat or drink acai if you’re scheduled to get an MRI, since it could interfere with the test results..

Interactions

If you take any medication regularly, talk to your doctor before you start acai supplements. They could interact with over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen and other NSAID painkillers, as well as prescription drugs for pain.

If you take cancer drugs, check with your doctor before taking an acai supplement. Acai could make the effects of these drugs weaker. Don’t use acai along with other antioxidant supplements unless your doctor says it’s OK.

Doctors don’t recommend acai supplements for children or for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
